Conducted a 6-wk trial with 30 19-54 yr old depressed outpatients to compare the antidepressant activity of maprotiline to that of imipramine. Neurophysiological, physical, laboratory, and psychiatric (including the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, Clinical Global Impression, and Multiple Affect Adjective Check List) assessments were made at weekly intervals. Results show that maprotiline was an effective and well tolerated antidepressant drug, its overall therapeutic activity being statistically superior and qualitatively different from the reference drug.
