Comparison of magnetic resonance angiography and computed tomographic angiography

Rapid advances in computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technology have expanded the role of noninvasive vascular imaging. Barring some exceptions, these noninvasive modalities, along with duplex ultrasonography, have largely replaced catheter angiography for diagnostic purposes. This article will compare technical aspects of CT angiography (CTA) and MR angiography (MRA), review clinical applications, and highlight differences, giving a rationale for the use of one particular modality over the other. In addition, a meta-analysis of efficacy of MRA in the detection of significant (>50%) coronary stenosis is presented. The overall sensitivity and specificity of MRA in the detection of significant coronary stenosis are 83% and 82%, respectively.
