Susceptibility data of urinary clinical isolates from general practice indicate that bacterial resistance was increasing, although several antimicrobial agents are available for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary infections. We studied 100 patients (84 F., 16 M.) with one or more symptoms of uncomplicated acute urinary tract infection (dysuria, frequency or burning on micturition). After urine culture and susceptibility test the patients were randomly allocated to receive treatment with either ciprofloxacin or amoxicillin/clavulanic acid. A statistical evaluation on the overall success rate between ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid was performed and the difference between these two groups was significant. In our experience, ciprofloxacin has been demonstrated to be significantly better in clinical symptoms resolution than amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and to be less liable in producing side effects.
