Examined the effect of fluoxetine (FLU) on anger, aggressive behavior, and depressed mood in symptomatic volunteers with borderline personality disorder (BPD) under placebo (PL)-controlled, double-blind conditions. 13 FLU Ss (mean age 37 yrs) and 9 PL Ss (mean age 35.6 yrs) participated in a 13-wk study. Pretreatment and posttreatment measures were obtained for global mood and functioning, anger, and depression. There was a clinically and statistically significant decrease in anger among the FLU Ss. Data suggest FLU may reduce anger in Ss with BPD. The number of Ss was small, the PL responsiveness was high, and the clinical characteristics of the Ss were in the mild to moderate range of severity. The data cannot be extrapolated to more severely ill BPD Ss, but further study of FLU and other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors is indicated in this population.
