Dornase alfa (rhDNase) catalysing extracellular DNA hydrolysis is the drug which is currently the most effective in changing the physical and chemical properties of CF sputum. It is a recombinant form of a natural human pancreatic enzyme - deoxyribonuclease (DNase I). The recommended dose is 2500U (2,5 mg) once daily using a jet nebuliser. The drug is well tolerated by most patients. Studies have shown that, in comparison to a placebo group, patients receiving this drug experience fewer respiratory tract infections and hospitalizations, improved lung function and quality of life. © 2006 by Polskie Towarzystwo Pediatryczne.
