To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of long-term mucokinetic treatment in patients with chronic bronchitis, domiodol (Mucolitico Maggioni), an organic iodine derivative, was given to 20 patients (10 males, 10 females; mean age 69 years ± 9 SD) at a daily dosage of 180-360 mg, according to two different therapeutic schemes: (a) Daily, for 30 days every month (1st and 3rd); (b) Daily, for the first 15 days of each month. The observation period was always over four months. Despite differences between the two groups, the treatment with domiodol induced marked clinical improvements in the different parameters observed. Statistical significance, however, was not always reached, due probably to the small nunber of patients. No adverse reactions to the test drug were observed, even when this was given concomitantly with other drugs. The authors, within the limits of their experience, express the opinion that the protracted treatment of chronic bronchitic patients with mucolytic drugs is useful to improve the symptoms of these patients.
