The protective effect of Sm 857 (Doqualast) in allergic asthma bronchiale

The protective effect of 3 x 200 mg Sm 857 (Doquaplast) per day was tested against placebo in a randomised double blind study conducted on 24 patients. An antiallergic and antiasthmatic effect was demonstrable already two hours after the first oral application. This effect was considerably enhanced after a two weeks' course. Under Sm 857 a significant rise was seen in the Specific PC(20FEV1), as well as a positive protection index. The airway resistance, the incidence rate of asthmatic attacks and fenoterol consumption dropped. At the same time the symptoms of a concomitant allergic rhinitis receded. Ten out of twelve patients in the verum group were responders compared with two out of twelve patients in the placebo groups.
