Sentinel surveillance includes a wide range of activities, aimed at knowing the evolution of certain health problems in the general population or in specific groups; to do so, it attempts to obtain a measure of the frequency of events in the country, without having to go to extensive and expensive surveys. The fundamental purpose of this type of surveillance is to obtain timely information of interest to public health at a lower cost.
