Objective To explore the effect of three-ball breathing trainer combined with traditional Chinese medicine characteristic nursing on the elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Methods Ninety elderly patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at Nantong Third People's Hospital from January 2020 to January 2023 were included and assigned into a control group (n = 45) and an observation group (n = 45) by the use of a random number table. The control group was treated with routine nursing, and the observation group was treated with three-ball breathing trainer combined with traditional Chinese medicine characteristic nursing. The pulmonary function, quality of life, and traditional Chinese medicine symptom scores were compared between the two groups. Results After 7 days of intervention and at discharge, the forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1 ), and peak expiratory flow (PEF) in both groups were increased compared with those before intervention (all P < 0. 05), and the observation group was higher than the control group at the same period (all P < 0. 05). At discharge, the scores of social activities, physical function, daily life, and psychological state in both groups were improved compared with those before intervention (all P < 0. 05 ), and the above scores in the observation group were higher than those in the control group (all P < 0. 05 ). After 7 days of intervention and at discharge, the scores of traditional Chinese medicine symptoms of expectoration, dyspnea, and cough in both groups were decreased compared with those before intervention (all P < 0. 05), and the above scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (all P < 0. 05 ). Conclusion The application of three-ball breathing trainer combined with traditional Chinese medicine characteristic nursing can ensure the early recovery of pulmonary function in elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, reduce the symptoms of traditional Chinese medicine, and help to improve the overall quality of life.
