This is a critical abstract of an economic evaluation that meets the criteria for inclusion on NHS EED. Each abstract contains a brief summary of the methods, the results and conclusions followed by a detailed critical assessment on the reliability of the study and the conclusions drawn. Despite greater medication costs, rosiglitazone (ROS) plus glipizide (GLP) combination therapy led to better clinical efficacy and reduced total health care resource utilisation in comparison with GLP monotherapy for the treatment of older patients with Type 2 diabetes. The difference in favour of the ROS+GLP combination therapy was driven by decreased resource use in terms of hospitalisations and emergency department visits.
