OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of head needle exercise therapy combined with conventional rehabilitation on joint mobility and activities of daily living (ADL) in patients with spastic cerebral palsy. METHODS: A total of 51 patients with spastic cerebral palsy who met the inclusion criteria were divided into 23 cases in the treatment group and 28 cases in the control group according to the random number table method. The patients in the control group received conventional rehabilitation treatment, and the treatment group was treated with head needle exercise on the basis of the control group. Before and after treatment, the arthroproscope was used to measure the angle of passive activity of the ankle, knee and hip joints. The modified Ashworth scale was used to measure the muscle tone of the adductors, hamstrings and gastrocnemius muscles of the lower limbs. The ADL rating scale was used to evaluate the ability to perform activities of daily living. RESULTS: The joint mobility of the patients in the treatment group improved to varying degrees compared with before treatment (P<0.05), and the popliteal socket angle and dorsiflexion angle of the patients in the treatment group were statistically significant compared with the control group (P<0.05). There were significant differences in hamstring and gastrocnemius muscle tone between the treatment group and the patients before treatment (P<0.05). The changes in gastrocnemius muscle tone in the treatment group were significantly different from those in the control group (P<0.05). There was a significant difference in ADL changes between the treatment group and the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Head acupuncture exercise therapy combined with conventional rehabilitation therapy can significantly improve joint mobility and ADL in patients with spastic cerebral palsy.
