INTERVENTION: Trade Name: Potassium Chloride Product Name: Potassium chloride Pharmaceutical Form: Infusion CAS Number: 7447‐40‐7 Other descriptive name: POTASSIUM CHLORIDE Concentration unit: mmol/ml millimole(s)/millilitre Concentration type: equal Concentration number: 1‐ Pharmaceutical form of the placebo: Infusion Route of administration of the placebo: Intravenous use CONDITION: Atrial fibrillation / atrial flutter Therapeutic area: Diseases [C] ‐ Cardiovascular Diseases [C14] PRIMARY OUTCOME: Main Objective: To see if an increase in serum potassium by administrating potassium chloride infusion can lead to conversion of atrial fibrillation/atrial flutter in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation /atrial flutter. Primary end point(s): Time to conversion of atrial fibrillation to sinus rythm. Secondary Objective: ‐To find out if there is association between hypokalemia and atrial fibrillation/atrial flutter.; ‐How long patients keep their sinus rhythm after conversion to sinus rhythm. Timepoint(s) of evaluation of this end point: 24 hours observation. SECONDARY OUTCOME: Secondary end point(s): Outpatient consultation after 3 months to see if the patients have kept there sinus rhythm. Timepoint(s) of evaluation of this end point: 3 months. INCLUSION CRITERIA: ‐ Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation/ atrial flutter with duration < 48 hours. ‐ Serum‐potassium = 4,0 mmol/l. Are the trial subjects under 18? no Number of subjects for this age range: F.1.2 Adults (18‐64 years) yes F.1.2.1 Number of subjects for this age range 100 F.1.3 Elderly (>=65 years) yes F.1.3.1 Number of subjects for this age range 100
