clinical study of cerebral malaria in children at Nishtar Hospital, Multan

To find the age and sex distribution, seasonal variation of the disease and various clinical presentations of the disease. The study was conducted from September 1993 to November 1994.Cases for the study were selected from the patients admitted to the department of Pediatriics Nishtar Hospital Multan during this period. Criteria for inclusion into study were coma or with severely altered mental status with a positive blood film for asexual torms of plasmodium falciparum. Male: Female. ratio was 1:08:1:00 most of the patients were more then 5 years of age mean age in the series being 63 years. Most of these patients were from the lower socioeconomic group ten [40%] were from the Multan District. While two came from Jhang and one patient came from as far as Kohlu in Baluchistan province. From Rajan pur district there were 2 cases which constitute 6% the cases. Vomiting was also commonly seen [60%] while diarrhea and GIT bleeding were detected in a minority [8% and 12% respectively]. The commonest signs were anaemia hepatosplenomegal low conscious level and abnormalities of muscle tone. How Haemoglobin was present in all the cases but other laboratory parameters were not significantly changed
