Effects of Stomach Reduction Surgery on oral health

INTERVENTION: D01.303.350.300.512 Experimental group: 13 men and 42 women, will receive dietary and oral hygiene guidelines, plaque control, salivary flow stimulus and topical applications of fluoride varnish, for a period of 6 months. Control group: 18 men and 36 women will receive printed leaflets containing guidelines on oral health care before bariatric surgery. The Oral Health Promotion Program (Experimental Group) and the leaflet with guidelines (Control Group) were offered in a randomized manner. I02.233.332.374 N02370 CONDITION: C07.465.714 C07.465.815.929 C07.793.720.210 C07.793.818.500 Dental Caries, Xerostomia, Tooth Erosion, Periodontal Diseases, Bariatric Surgery ; C07.793.720.210 ; C07.465.815.929 ; C07.793.818.500 ; C07.465.714 ; E02.065.062 E02.065.062 PRIMARY OUTCOME: Decrease in the number of enamel changes in the six‐month period, verified by oral evaluation using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS II), (p = 0.004); Reduction in the number of dentin changes in the period of six months, verified by means of oral evaluation using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) index (p = 0.005); Reduction in gingival bleeding, verified by oral evaluation in the six‐month period using the Community Periodontal Index (CPI) (p <0.0001); Reduction in plaque index over a period of one month and six months by means of oral evaluation using O'Leary Plaque Score Index (p <0.0001); Increased salivary flow in the six‐month period, verified by means of the collection of stimulated saliva, (p = 0.039). It was foreseen in the project to reduce the main oral injuries that affect the bariatric patients, such as dental caries, periodontal disease, dental erosion, xerostomia and dental plaque. SECONDARY OUTCOME: Secondary outcomes are not expected INCLUSION CRITERIA: Obese volunteers of both genders; aged between 16 and 60 years; with indication for stomach reduction surgery; who underwent bariatric surgery in the year 2015 and 2016.
