Species of the genus Tagetes are known for their anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and antioxidant properties. Tagetes minuta L., is a species endemic to South America that has been used in traditional medicine as an antibacterial, insecticide, biocide, disinfectant, anthelmintic, antifungal and antiseptic agent, as well as in urinary tract infections. The objective of this study was to carry out a bibliographical review of articles and patents relating to the ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry and biological activities of T. minuta, contributing to the understanding of the therapeutic applications of the species. The bibliographical search for relevant studies, published between 2000 and 2023, was carried out in the following databases: MedLine (PubMed), Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar and Portal de Periódicos Capes. Furthermore, the Brazilian patent data- base was analyzed: National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI). The review demonstrates that T. minuta, due to its chemical diversity, both from the essential oil obtained from its leaves and flowers, as well as from the extracts and isolated substances, has multiple uses. The study contributes to guiding future research for the development of innovative products in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and agricultural areas.
