CRD SUMMARY: This review concluded that acupuncture proved to be more effective for pain reduction and improvement of function than sham acupuncture and no additional treatment (usual care) for patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Acupuncture should therefore be considered as an alternative to treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The authors’ conclusions are appropriate, given the evidence presented, and are likely to be reliable.
