Are Traditional Public Health Strategies Consistent with Contemporary American Values

From November 2002 to July 2003 there were 8,098 probable cases of severe accute respiratory syndrome ("SARS") in twenty-nine countries, with 774 deaths. The SARS epidemic demonstrated the capability of global econimic and transportatins systems to spead an infection thousand of miles withing hours. It also demonstrated the challenges of using the traditional public health measures of surveilllance, contact tracing, quartantine, and isolation in modern, independent, and population dense societies.
