Profile of resistance of Acinetobacter baumannii to antimicrobial in the semi-intensive and intensive care units of the general Hospital of Fortaleza

The nosocomial infections are the most frequent complications of the medical handling in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) and Semi - Intensive Care Unit (SI). Bacteria of the genus Acinetobacter, specially Acinetobacter baumannii, have become important in the last years due to a great participation in grave infections and to the selected resistance to the antimicrobial. The objective of this study was to verify the profile of resistance of the strains of Acinetobacter baumannii, isolated from clinical samples of patients interned in the General Hospital of Fortaleza (HGF). The bacteria were isolated in appropriate culture. The identification and test of sensitivity to the antimicrobial were made in the system MicrosScan® automation. 62 (14%) of the 437 positive samples originating from the ICU and SI, in the period of January to July of 2004, were positive for A. baumannii. The topography with bigger number of isolated was tracheal aspirate (49%) and blood (29%). Regarding the profile of resistance, it was observed that the strains of A. baumannii isolated from cateter were resistant to barely all of the antimicrobials, with exception of the quinolonas and imipenem. We concluded that there are strains of A. baumannii multiresistants to the antimicrobials, including imipenem, and that the tracheal aspirate was the most prevalent site of infection by this pathogen.
