Twenty-four patients with acute myeloid leukaemia in complete remission during cytostatic maintenance therapy were randomized to receive either placebo (12 patients) or levamisole (12 patients) in a double-blind investigation. The mean duration of remission was 10 mth in the placebo group, as compared with 16 mth in the levamisole group. In an uncontrolled preliminary trial, seven patients with acute myeloid leukaemia in complete remission were treated with levamisole. Here, also, the mean duration of remission was 16 mth, and two patients from this group are still in remission after 39 and 46 mth, respectively. The preliminary results presented here suggest that levamisole may prevent relapse in acute myeloid leukaemia.
