OBJETIVE: To observe the action of electroacupuncture treatment on rapid recovery after colon cancer surgery and the clinical efficacy. METHODS: Eighty-six postoperative patients with colon cancer were randomized to an observation group and a control group, with 43 cases in each group. The control group received conventional treatment with accelerated rehabilitation surgery program adopted during the perioperative period and the observation group received electroacupuncture treatment from the 1 st day to the 5 th day after surgery in addition. Postoperative first flatus and defecation times were compared between the two groups. The abdominal pain visual analogue scale(VAS) score was recorded after surgery. RESULT: Postoperative first flatus and defecation times were shorter in the observation group than those in the control group, with a statistically significant difference between the two groups(P<0.05). The abdominal pain VAS score was lower in the observation group than that in the control group from the 2 nd day after surgery(P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Electroacupuncture based on accelerated rehabilitation surgery can shorten postoperative flatus and defecation times, relieve postoperative abdominal pain and promote postoperative rapid recovery in the patients.
