This is a critical abstract of an economic evaluation that meets the criteria for inclusion on NHS EED. Each abstract contains a brief summary of the methods, the results and conclusions followed by a detailed critical assessment on the reliability of the study and the conclusions drawn. Compared with standard care, the diabetes specialist nursing (DSN) intervention was associated with a shorter length of hospital stay without any adverse impact on the readmission rates and the use of community resources or perception of quality of care. The costs of the intervention were offset by the reduced hospitalisation.
