OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficacy of manual release of popliteus muscle in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. METHODS: 120 patients with knee osteoarthritis who visited the Orthopedics Clinic of Liuzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine from April 2020 to April 2021 were selected and randomly divided into two groups, with 60 cases in each group. The control group was treated with oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and the treatment group was treated with manual popliteus muscle release in addition to oral drugs. The visual analog scale, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index, and knee joint mobility score were used to compare the improvement in pain and joint mobility before and after treatment. RESULTS: Compared with before treatment, the VAS and WOMAC scores of both groups after treatment and 4 weeks of follow-up were significantly reduced (P<0.05), and the ROM score was significantly increased (P<0.05). The total effective rate of the treatment group was 90% higher than that of the control group, 75%, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Manual release of popliteus muscle can improve the clinical efficacy of treating knee joints and is worthy of clinical promotion.
