OBJECTIVE: To determine the taste tolerability and adverse effects of antigingivitis therapy mouthwashes of oregano on college students from 18 to 22 years old from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of El Salvador. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The design was a randomized clinical trial (RCT) Phase I, single-blind, two parallel group study to compare adverse effects and tolerability of two concentrations of oregano mouthwash (0.1% and 0.05%). The sample corresponded to 43 subjects each group, all were subjected to both concentrations with bleach programmed period to avoid slant. The presence or absence of adverse effects were assessed using an observation guide and a blog. The results were entered into a database in a SPSS free version and Chi square employment program to demonstrate difference between the studied concentrations. RESULTS: Of the two concentrations investigated 0.05% presented a single case of oral thrush, representing 1.16% of patients. At the concentration of 0.1% no clinical effect was present in any of the 43 patients evaluated. Subsequent to the bleach period and cross concentration mouthwashes, patients in both groups showed no adverse effect; therefore statistically not significant differences between the two concentrations was found. Regarding the taste tolerability Pleasant variable showed an increase as the days passed by and the unpleasant variables, burning and desquamation decreased over time. CONCLUSIONS: No statistically significant difference between both concentrations and in terms of adverse effects were found; in terms of taste tolerability on average almost, 75% of participants reported both concentrations as acceptable, reports of unpleasant sensations decreased over time.
