The clinical effect of intramuscular injection of ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and penicillin + streptomycin in acute cholecystitis was compared in a randomized study of 77 patients (50 women and 27 men). Two thirds of the patients were over 60 yr of age. No difference was found in the effect of the 3 antibiotics judged from the following parameters: pain, tenderness, palpable resistance, jaundice, fever, duration of stay in bed, and biligraphy.
