Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a common gastrointestinal disease that is highly prevalent globally [1]. There is no doubt thatFD can cause deterioration in health related quality of life (HR-QL) among patients; in this context complementary andalternative medicine modalities may show promising options [2, 3]. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of atraditional Persian medicine, jollab, on quality of life in patients suffering from FD. One hundred and sixty patients with adiagnosis of FD were enrolled and treated with either jollab or placebo (15 ml, t.i.d., orally) during a double-blindrandomized clinical trial for 4 weeks. The patients filled out SF-36 forms of quality of life, a standard valid device forassessment of quality of life, before the beginning and one month after the end of the trial. The response rate was higher inthe treatment group than in the control group in all physical and mental aspects (P < 0.001). Physical and mentalcomponent summary means didn't show significant difference at the beginning of the trial but, in follow-up time physicalcomponent summary mean in treatment group (51.97 ± 5.73) improved in comparison to control group (43.46 ± 7.81) (p< 0.001). This alteration was seen in mental component summary mean in treatment group (50.05 ± 6.47) versus controlgroup (35.51 ± 9.78), too. In conclusion, jollab improved quality of life in patients diagnosed with FD. Complementary andalternative medicaments like this traditional Persian medicine beverage could improve HR-QL in special patients.
