Prospective randomised study on management of perianal abscesses comparing open drainage with American technique

INTERVENTION: Prospective randomised, controlled trial. Random allocation to: 1. Open drainage 2. American technique CONDITION: Surgery: Perianal abscess ; Surgery ; Abscess of anal and rectal regions PRIMARY OUTCOME: 1. Pain score; 2. Time to return to normal activity ; 3. Time to return to normal work ; 4. Wound healing time ; 5. Quality of life ; 6. Recurrence ; 7. Fistula rate SECONDARY OUTCOME: Not provided at time of registration INCLUSION CRITERIA: Those patients who present with perianal abscesses to an acute surgical ward will be approached for participation in this study.
