Description of error: –ABSTRACT line 6 (Methods section) and line 17 (Conclusion section): the use of the acronym HESr is not correct and must be changed in ethanolic extract of Serenoa repens. Line 4 correct Phase III in Phase IV. –PARAGRAPH 2.3 STUDY TREATMENT line 7: must be specified “ethanolic extract of Serenoa repens”. –DISCUSSION last paragraph page 11: “a single brand of hexanic Serenoa repens” is not correct and must change in “a single brand of ethanolic Serenoa repens”. Comment: This publication evaluated the efficacy of combining a standardized single ethanolic extract of Serenoa repens with alfuzosin versus alfuzosin monotherapy in men with LUTS due to BPH. The type of evaluation during the normal clinical practice as used in this study, can provide different information in line with a real-world situation compared to the rigidity of a clinical trial. In some parts of the publication A CORRIGENDUM is needed: –ABSTRACT line 6 (Methods section) and line 17 (Conclusion section): the use of the acronym HESr is not correct and must be changed in ethanolic extract of Serenoa repens. Moreover, at the beginning of this last paragraph of page 11 DISCUSSION, this further comment is useful to insert: “We underline the relevance aspect that different methods of extraction could produce differences in fatty acid composition and therefore, results from different clinical studies are comparable only when the Serenoa Repens extracts are produced via the same validated method. In the present comparative study, all patients were treated in a real-world setting and, in the combination therapy group, a single-brand ethanolic extract of Serenoa repens was used. Ethanolic extracts of Serenoa repens differ significantly from hexanic extracts in fatty acid concentration, sterol and unsaponifiable fraction. Thus, the properties of hexanic extract cannot be extrapolated to ethanolic extract, nor vice versa and results of the present study cannot be compared with others using different extracts.” These corrections are relevant, otherwise the type of extract used in the study may be misunderstood. The Serenoa repens extract used for all patients treated with the combination therapy was not a hexanic extract but an ethanolic extract. Serenoa repens extracts have shown significant anti-inflammatory activity in the prostate and are commonly used in clinical practice. The hexanic extract of Serenoa repens is supported by the greatest experimental and clinical evidence in the literature regarding the treatment of BPH, evidenced by several publications and also specifically cited by the European Association of Urology guidelines. Ethanolic extracts of Serenoa repens differ significantly from hexanic extracts in fatty acid concentration, sterol and unsaponifiable fraction. Thus, the properties and results of hexanic extract cannot be extrapolated to ethanolic extract, nor vice versa and results of the present study cannot be compared with others using different extracts. We apologize for these corrections.
