Aim: To observe the osteogenesis process of heterotopic transplantation of autogenous minute granular bone, and study the mechanism of transplantation of autogenous granular bone. Methods: Forty New Zealand rabbits, 2.5 to 3.5 kg, were randomly divided into four groups: 0-, 3-, 10- and 21-day group, 10 in each group. The autologous porous bone of ilium was made into granulated bone of 50 μm to 100 μm in diameter and was agglomeratively implanted into dens of quadriceps femoris and the specimen was harvested at the same time of establishment of granular bone (0-day group) and at 3, 10 and 21 days after operation, and then speciment was observed by histological examination and transmission electron microscopy. Results: (1) During the preparation of granulated bone, large quantities of osteocytes were preserved. (2) Three days after transplantation of dens of muscle, some osteocytes survived. (3) The osteocytes still survived and transformed on the 10th day. (4) The woven bone was formed on the 21st day. Conclusion: After the heterotopic transplantation of autogenous granular bone (50 μm to 100 μm in diameter), it has the activies of osteogenesis directly and inductive osteogenesis.
