Investigated the efficacy of naltrexone (NLX) in preventing reabuse of heroin among outpatient Israeli heroin addicts in a double-blind, controlled design. NLX or placebo treatment was given as part of a general 12-wk treatment plan to 32 male Ss, aged 24–47 yrs, who successfully completed a detoxification program and met research criteria. Dosage was 50 mg of NLX taken orally 3 times a wk for 12 wks. The follow-up procedure included an interview, urine tests, and screening for possible adverse effects. Fewer heroin-positive urine tests were found in the NLX group than in the placebo group. Throughout the study the number of drug-free patients in the NLX group was higher than in the placebo group, and the NLX group showed a significant improvement in most psychological parameters as compared to the placebo group. Results suggest that Israeli heroin addicts may benefit from treatment with NLX. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved)
