OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this randomized double blind clinical trial was to evaluate the levels of dental sensitivity in vital tooth whitening with different combinations of self‐activation HP and CP. METHODS: Randomized double blind clinical trial with 120 participants between 18‐65 years, assigned in four tooth whitening treatment groups (G): G1= CP 10% + HP 40%, G2= CP 15% + HP 40%, G3= CP 20% + HP 40%, G4= HP 10% + HP 40%. Tooth color was measured at baseline and levels of dental sensitivity and tooth color change during and after treatment, the data was analyzed with a two‐way ANOVA. RESULTS: No statistical significant differences were found in dental sensitivity (p= 0.268). CONCLUSIONS: Dental sensitivity when presented was mostly classified as mild to moderate, and related to long exposure times of the peroxides to the teeth. Length of treatment of the In‐office technique (HP 40%) can be decreased through combinations with an ambulatory technique (CP 10%, 15%, 20% or HP 10%). Self‐activating HP influences the effectiveness of in‐office tooth whitening since dental sensitivity becomes manageable.
