Examined the pharmacologic interaction between fluoxetine (FL) and cocaine (CA) in humans in a controlled inpatient laboratory setting. Ss were 5 adult (aged 27–43 yrs) male cocaine abusers; Ss received 3 ascending intravenous doses (0, 20, and 40 mg) of CA and FL or placebo under double-blind conditions. Treatment with the highest dose of FL (40 mg) attenuated the subjective response to CA challenges on an array of measures reflecting liking for the drug and positive mood effects. There were no adverse interactions between FL and CA observed on any physiologic measures. Data suggest that FL may be safely administered to CA abusers, and it may act in a therapeutic fashion to reduce the euphoric effects of CA.
