This is a critical abstract of an economic evaluation that meets the criteria for inclusion on NHS EED. Each abstract contains a brief summary of the methods, the results and conclusions followed by a detailed critical assessment on the reliability of the study and the conclusions drawn. The metered-dose inhaler with commercially available spacer (EI) was as effective as the nebuliser (NEB), homemade spacer (EA) and dry-powder inhaler (PI) in treating acute attacks of asthma in school-aged children and adolescents. It produced fewer adverse events, but had a high cost.
