Effect of Exercise on Pain and Disability Related to Spine Pain in the Elderly: A Randomized Clinical Trial

INTERVENTION: Experimental group: 60 older people of both sexes with nonspecific low back pain will be submitted to a physical activity protocol in groups (20 minutes of aerobic exercises, 30 minutes of strength and balance exercises), three times a week for 8 weeks. The intensity of the strength exercises will be the point of voluntary fatigue and for aerobic exercises a score of 3 or 4 on the Borg effort perception scale. Control Group: 60 older people of both sexes with nonspecific low back pain, will remain on the waiting list and will be instructed to continue with their daily activities of life and not to start physical activity during the study. G11.427.410.698.277 Other CONDITION: C23.888.592.612.107.400 Low Back Pain. PRIMARY OUTCOME: Improvement in disability related to low back pain, assessed by the Roland and Morris questionnaire. The parameter will be the score from 0 to 24 in the questionnaire before, after the intervention and after 6 and 12 months of follow‐up. Improvement in pain related to low back pain, assessed by the numerical pain scale. The parameter will be the score from 0 to 10 in the questionnaire before, after the intervention and after 6 and 12 months of follow‐up. SECONDARY OUTCOME: Decrease in the frequency of falls assessed by the frequency of falls questionnaire. The parameter will be the number of falls before, after the intervention and after 6 and 12 months of follow‐up. Decreased fear of falling, assessed by the Falls Efficacy Scale ‐ International questionnaire. The parameter will be the score from 16 to 64 in the questionnaire before, after the intervention and after 6 and 12 months of follow‐up. Improvement in the perceived global effect, assessed by the scale of perception of the global effect. The parameter will be a score of ‐3 to 3 in the questionnaire before, after intervention and after 6 and 12 months of follow‐up. Increase in the level of physical activity assessed by the Physical Activity Rating questionnaire. The parameter will be the score from 0 to 7 in the questionnaire before, after the intervention and after 6 and 12 months of follow‐up. INCLUSION CRITERIA: Older peoples men and women aged 60 or over; Complaining of nonspecific low back pain lasting at least 3 months; Disability rated 4/24 or more on the Roland and Morris Disability Questionnaire in the last six months and persistent back pain with 3/10 or more pain on the numerical pain scale in the last six months
