OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical characteristics of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Hunan province so as to provide a scientific basis for discovery, treatment and prevention of COVID-19 cases. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data about all confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Hunan province from January 21, 2020 to February 13, 2020, and then compared the differences in the results of clinical manifestations, laboratory examination and chest computed tomography (CT) scan of patients with different ages and clinical types. RESULTS: The high incidence age of 918 patients was 15-64 years old, with 28 patients younger than 15 years old (only accounting for 3.05%). There were 318 (34.64%) mild cases, 523 (56.97%) ordinary cases, 70 (7.63%) severe cases and 7 (0.76%) critical cases. 240 (26.14%) cases had more than one underlying disease. The main clinical manifestations were fever (67.54%) and dry cough (42.59%), with fatigue, expectoration, cough and headache in some patients. The total number of leukocytes in blood routine examination was mainly decreased or normal (97.37%), the number of lymphocytes decreased (43.93%), and the percentage of neutrophils decreased or normal (66.46%). Chest CT scans of 95% patients had the imaging features of pneumonia. CONCLUSIONS: Clinical manifestations of the COVID-19 cases were atypical, with fever and dry cough as the main features. The patients’ hemograms were changed, and their chest CT scans showed the imaging features of pneumonia. Chest CT scan is a good auxiliary diagnostic method.
