Comparison of efficacy of Fosfomycin with ciprofloxacin in pediatric uncomplicated UTI: A randomized control trial in tertiary care hospitals of Pakistan

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of Fosfomycin and ciprofloxacin in the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI) in pediatric patients. Methodology: This study was carried out at Railway General Hospital's Pediatric Department, Rawalpindi and included 160 patients of UTI. Participants were randomly assigned to either Group A, where they received a 5-day oral course of ciprofloxacin, or Group B, where a single oral dose of Fosfomycin was administered. Results: The average age in Group A was 5.2 +/- 2.0 years and in Group B was 6.7 +/- 2.5 years. Group A comprised 43 males (66.2%) and 22 females (33.8%). Group B consisted of 40 males (61.5%) and 25 females (438.5%). Ciprofloxacin demonstrated efficacy in 36 patients (55.4%) in Group A. Fosfomycin exhibited efficacy in 50 patients (76.9%) in Group B (p=0.016). Conclusion: A single oral dose of Fosfomycin proved to be more efficacious than a 5-day regimen of oral ciprofloxacin in treating acute uncomplicated UTI in children.
