Suicide Behavior and Its Risk Factors Among Medical Undergraduates in Anhui Province

OBJECTIVE:To describe the prevalence and the risk factors for suicide behaviors among the medical students, and to provide evidence for suicide prevention.METHODS:The freshmen and sophomore from three medical universities in Anhui were selected as the subjects. Logistic regression was employed to explore risk factors for suicide behavior.RESULTS:The reported rate of attempting suicide was 1.43% and 16.42% had suicide ideation. Of them, 1.91% of female and 0.88% of male had attempted suicide. The rate of attempting suicide for genders was significantly different(P0.05). About 13.39% of male and 18.49 of female had suicide ideation, and statistical significant difference was also found in genders. Step-wise logistic regression analysis indicated that female, family function disorder, depression and anxiety were the risk factors for attempting suicide; female, poor family economic status, family function disorder, depression and anxiety were the risk factors for suicide ideation.CONCLUSION:College, family and psychological factors are the main influencing factors for suicide related behaviors.
