The objective of the research was to review in literature the relationship between nutritional factors and migraine, emphasizing those involved in triggering crises and their possible action mechanisms. Methodology: a systematic review of literature in Medline and Lilacs database was conducted, and the most relevant and recent scientific articles were selected. Technical textbooks were also reviewed. [...] Outcome: migraine is characterized by recurrent unilateral or bilateral headaches, generally with throbbing feature. It affects 10% to 20% of the world population, particularly women. Several factors contribute for migraine disorders, such as biochemical changes, psychosocial stress, food, alcohol and drugs. The nutritional treatment consists on identifying food related to migraine and eliminating them from the diet. [...] Deficiency in B vitamins and minerals (calcium, magnesium, selenium, zinc) can beinvolved in the occurrence and intensity of migraine crisis. In order to improve brain metabolism, some nutrients, such as lecithin, omega-3 fatty acids, phenylalanine, taurine, methionine and isoflavone, and herbs (basil, balm, ginger and Artemisia) are indicated to treat migraine. Conclusion: some nutrients and foods have been pointed as triggering factors of headache crises for migraine sensitive people. Nevertheless, in order to establish an individualized nutritional strategy to treat migraine, it is important to identify the causal factors and also the patternsof its attack. More studies are required to better understand the role of nutritional factors related to migraine.
