A six-year-old girl presented with severe emotional disturbance. The symptoms were not consistent with attention deficit disorder. The child did not manifest difficulties with attention span or distractibility. A double-blind active drug-placebo study with magnesium pemoline confirmed a beneficial pharmacologic response to the medication. The family was amenable to psychotherapy following the institution of medication.
