Epidemiological profile of HIV patients of coastal region of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, in 2010-2011

The objective was to describe the profile of HIV patients attending the Specialized Health Care Centre in the municipality of Rio das Ostras, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2010-2011. A cross-sectional study using a secondary database, including male and female HIV-infected patients aged over 18, excluding those who had abandoned follow-up and excluding deaths. 232 medical records were analyzed. Average age was 39.9 years (SD=12.1) and 58,2% were male; males were associated with being older, having sexual and blood routes of infection and using antiretroviral therapy. White males with low education levels and mainly infected through sexual contact were predominant among HIVinfected patients in Rio das Ostras.
