Cultivation and isolation of coronavirus-like particles from patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome in Shanghai

Objective Cultivation and isolation of coronavirus like particles in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome in Shanghai. Methods The throat swab samples of SARS cases were cultured and isolated with several cultured cells. Results The CPE was found in the Vero E6 cells. After the super centrifuge and the coronavirus like particals about 60~100 nm were observed in the bottom through negative staining electronmicroscope. The IFA of the infection cells and the serum of the patient was positive. The coronavirus like particle was temporarily named"SARS CoV Fudan I". Conclusions Novel coronavirus like particles were found in the culture of the 1st SARS patient's throat swab in Shanghai.
