Discusses a double-blind clinical study of 52 acute and chronic paranoid schizophrenics. Ss were divided in 2 matched groups, treated daily with 300 mg clozapine or 600 mg chlorpromazine, respectively, and evaluated with a brief psychiatric rating scale. Results show several advantages of clozapine over chlorpromazine: (a) more rapid onset of improvement; (b) more frequent return to work and better social adjustment; (c) better remission of delusions, hallucinations, and anxiety; (d) milder and more transitory occurrence of parkinsonism; (e) absence of extrapyramidal attacks of dyskinesis; and (f) overall, less intensive somatic side effects. It is concluded that clozapine significantly enriches pharmacotherapy of psychoses. (Russian summary) (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved)
