EFFECT OF RELAXATION AND MUSIC THERAPY IN COPD SUBJECTS- RANDOMIZED CONTROL TRIAL

INTERVENTION: Intervention1: progressive muscle relaxation: PMR will be used as intervention and shall be compared with music therapy. THIS WILL FOLLOW THE PROTOCOL STANDARISED BY BERNESTEIN AND BERKOVEC WHICH CONSISTS OF 16 MUSCLE GROUP RELAXATION. ITS EFFICACY HAS BEEN PROVED IN OTHER CONDITIONS. Control Intervention1: MUSIC THERAPY and PMR technique: MUSIC AND RELAXATION WILL BE USED FOR INTERVENTION AND SHALL BE COMPARED. Control Intervention2: MUSIC THERAPY and PMR technique: MUSIC AND RELAXATION WILL BE USED FOR INTERVENTION AND SHALL BE COMPARED. Control Intervention3: MUSIC THERAPY: MUSIC THERAPY WILL BE GIVEN TO ONE GROUP FOR 30 MINUTES IN TWO SESSIONS ON EACH DAY FOR 6 MONTHS. SUBJECTS WILL KEEP PRACTISING EVEN AFTER DISCHARGE AT HOME. A TELEPHONIC CONVERSATION WILL TAKE PLACE ONCE A WEEK TO KNOW THEIR COMPLIANCE. MUSIC WILL BE ONLY INSTRUMENTAL, NON VOCAL AND OF 60‐80 BEATS PER MINUTE, KNOWN TO HAVE RELAXING EFFECT. CONDITION: CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE PRIMARY OUTCOME: anxiety, dyspnea‐‐‐‐‐‐Timepoint: 0 and 6 months SECONDARY OUTCOME: heart rate ; blood pressure ; respiratory rate‐‐‐‐‐‐Timepoint: beginning and at 6 months INCLUSION CRITERIA: Patients admitted to KMC hospitals recovering from a recent episode of acute exacerbation of COPD. All of them had Clinical diagnosis of COPD, based on expiratory airflow limitation evidenced by forced expiratory volume 1 second/forced vital capacity percent (FEV1/FVC%) less than 70 and FEV1% predicted less than 80.16 Self‐report of shortness of breath at rest. At the time of recruitment patients were in stable condition as assessed by stability of blood gas values and hemodynamics. None of the subjects were on sympathomimetics or suffer from a low cardiac output. All patients were free from exacerbation for at least seven days.
