Nedocromil sodium 2 mg and 4 mg were compared with placebo in a randomized, double-blind, crossover trial to determine the effect of nedocromil sodium in attenuating asthma provoked by exercise challenge. Nine adult atopic asthmatics participated in the trial. Active drug or placebo was given by pressurized inhaler 25 min before an inclined treadmill exercise test; FEVsub 1 was measured before and after drug administration and at intervals during 30 min post- exercise. Nedocromil sodium significantly attenuated the bronchoconstrictor response to exercise, with a significant decrease (p < 0.01) in the mean maximum percentage fall in FEVsub 1 after exercise. No significant difference was observed between the effects of the two nedocromil sodium dosage regimens.
